Itinerary

DAY 1

🕕 Meeting at 06:00 in Bucharest in the car park at Piata Victoriei (📍 Parcare Piata Victoriei on Google Maps), where the Autocarul Veseliei and the tour guide will be waiting for you. ⛪ Strehaia Monastery Built by Mihai Viteazul and rebuilt in 1645 at the order of Matei Basarab, Strehaia Monastery is a fortified edifice that "witnessed" impressive battles in its time. Built of stone, the church of this monastery in the Mehedinți town of Strehaia presents a curiosity. Unlike all other Orthodox places of worship, which have their altar to the east, it is the only monastery in the country with its altar oriented to the south. Legend, recounted also by Nicolae Iorga, says that Mihai Viteazul, who was born in Strehaia, built a first church, raising it at night and, orienting himself incorrectly, assembled the church with its altar to the south. ⛴️ Boat trip on the Danube An unforgettable experience! You will sail among impressive landscapes, crossing Cazanele Mici (the Small Cauldrons) and Cazanele Mari (the Large Cauldrons), where the Danube narrows and is flanked by high rock walls. Along the way, we will admire the Statue of Decebalus, the largest rock sculpture in Europe, a tribute to the great Dacian king. The trip continues with a view of Mraconia Monastery, situated on the bank of the Danube, and exploration of the Veterani Grotto, a cave with a fascinating history, used in the past as a defence point. The last stop is Ponicova Cave, the largest cave in the Danube Gorges, accessible both from the water and from land, offering a captivating adventure in the heart of nature. 🛏️ Accommodation at Hotel Caras 3*, Oravita / similar 🍽️ Dinner

DAY 2

🍽️ Breakfast 🚂 The Banat Semmering This is one of the most spectacular and oldest mountain railways in Romania, renowned for its impressive route and the picturesque landscapes of the Anina Mountains. The railway line connects the towns of Oravita and Anina and was inaugurated on 15 December 1863, being the first mountain railway on the present-day territory of Romania. The route is approximately 33.4 km long and includes 14 tunnels and 10 viaducts. Due to its resemblance to the famous Semmering railway in Austria, it was given the name "Semeringul Banatean" (the Banat Semmering). In 2021, Semeringul Banatean was designated "Destination of the Year", becoming one of the important tourist attractions of the Banat. 🏛️ Anina Cultural Museum Centre This is a place where we will discover the history of the town of Anina and the story of the community that formed around mining.⛏️Here we will be able to see objects and collections related to mining activity, as well as to the daily life of the locals. Among the exhibits are minerals and rocks, traditional objects, documents and a model of the Oravita–Anina railway, one of the most important symbols of the town. 🏛️ Villa Ferdinand in Anina This is one of the important historic buildings in the town of Anina, known for its connection to the Royal Family of Romania. The villa has remained in the memory of the place because, in 1926, it hosted King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria during their visit to the mining area. Today, Villa Ferdinand is a landmark of the historical heritage of the town of Anina and recalls the period when the area was an important mining centre. 🏭 The Mining Museum in Anina This is an objective dedicated to the history of mining in Anina. The museum keeps alive the story of a community developed around coal extraction and presents the importance that mining had for the town and for the entire area of the Mountainous Banat. ⚙️We will be able to see old mining installations and equipment, documents and objects that illustrate the work of miners and the evolution of coal mining. 🛏️ Accommodation at Hotel Caras 3*, Oravita / similar 🍽️ Dinner

DAY 3

🍽️ Breakfast 🌊 Bigar Waterfall This was one of the most spectacular and well-known waterfalls in Romania, renowned for its unique shape. The water of the Bigar spring flowed over a moss-covered rock, forming a "curtain" of delicate droplets that fell into the Minis river. The waterfall is part of the Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park, a place of remarkable natural beauty. Although the waterfall collapsed in 2021 due to natural causes, it remains a symbol of natural beauty in Romania and continues to attract visitors to the area for its picturesque landscapes. ⚙️ The Water Mills of Rudaria Rudaria, also known as Eftimie Murgu, in Caraș-Severin county, is a true gem of peasant architecture. The water mills, driven by the force of the Rudaria river, have been used by locals since ancient times. The mills are set like strings of beads along the watercourse, for a length of three kilometres in the village and beyond it. The furthest from the locality, and perhaps the most spectacular, is the Moara cu Tunel (Mill with Tunnel), because the water comes from under the rocks. 🚌 Arrival in Bucharest in the evening, depending on traffic conditions.
