1-Day Trip to Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi – 2026 Guide

If you want to explore Bulgaria's medieval history without taking time off work, the one-day trip to Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi is the perfect solution. We leave Bucharest in the morning and return in the evening, after visiting Tsarevets Fortress, villages with fortified 17th-century houses and Mini Bulgaria Park. It's a trip suitable for families, couples and history lovers who want to discover the 'City of Tsars' and the unique architecture of Arbanasi village. In the following lines I'll show you what we visit, what's included in the price and how to make your reservation.

What we visit

Our trip starts at 06:00 from Piața Victoriei car park in Bucharest, where the Coach of Joy and the accompanying guide await you. The first stop is in Arbanasi village, renowned for its unique and well-preserved architecture. Here we see houses dating from the 17th–18th centuries, built by wealthy merchants who fortified them to protect themselves from Ottoman invasions. We visit the Church of the Nativity of Christ, which houses remarkable frescoes, and the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Did you know that the fresco painting in the Church of the Nativity of Christ was completed in 1597, and the entire interior of the church is covered with paintings executed in stages — in the years 1597, 1632, 1638, 1643, 1649, 1681? The first documentary record of Arbanasi village dates from 1538, when Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent gave it as a gift to his son-in-law, Vizier Rustem Pasha. Since 2000, the village has been recognised as a historic monument of national importance, with 144 old fortified houses, 5 churches and 2 monasteries.

The next stop is Veliko Tarnovo, often called the 'City of Tsars'. It was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire between the 12th and 14th centuries. The old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and traditional Bulgarian houses, with wooden balconies and tiled roofs, offering an authentic period atmosphere. The old part of the city is situated on three hills — Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora — rising among the meanders of the Yantra River.

We then climb to Tsarevets Fortress, one of the most emblematic attractions, situated on one of the city's three hills. The fortress is famous for its sound and light show that recreates Bulgaria's tumultuous history. Covering an area of 12 hectares, the fortress palace was expanded during the reign of Ivan Asen II (1218–1241), reaching an area of 4,872 m². Restoration of the fortress began in 1930 and was completed in 1981, the year marking 1,300 years since the founding of the Bulgarian state.

The last stop is Mini Bulgaria Park, which offers a unique perspective on Bulgarian architectural and cultural heritage through small-scale replicas of some of the country's most famous buildings and monuments. The exhibits include miniatures of Tsarevets Fortress, the Boyana Church, the Roman Theatre in Plovdiv and many other historic and natural sites of national importance. The park was officially opened on 30 September 2017 and features over 60 handmade miniature replicas, most at a scale of 1:25. We return to Bucharest during the evening, depending on traffic conditions.
