Bucovina Coach Tour: Painted Monasteries and Traditions in 2026

Bucovina is a treasure trove of Romanian spirituality and tradition, and its painted monasteries are recognised worldwide for their beauty and uniqueness. This 3-day tour takes you through the most impressive places of worship — Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița — and offers you the chance to discover the authenticity of Bucovina: from the Mocănița Huțulca and Marginea black pottery to the museums that keep popular tradition alive. If you dream of a complete cultural getaway, with comfortable accommodation, traditional meals and an accompanying guide, this programme is designed for you. Let's see what awaits you each day.

What We Visit

Our tour begins with Cămârzani Monastery, a nuns' convent founded in the 19th century by the boyar Emanoil Mortun, where you will be welcomed with a warm meal prepared by the nuns. We continue with the Museum of Popular Customs of Bucovina, the only museum dedicated to the Bucovinan folk calendar, which reveals traditions from Saint Andrew's Day to Christmas, Epiphany and Easter. The first day ends at Voroneț Monastery, Stephen the Great's foundation built in 1488. Did you know that Voroneț was built in just 3 months and 3 weeks, an incredibly short time for such a masterpiece? Also, the monastery is nicknamed 'the Sistine Chapel of the East' due to the 'Last Judgement' fresco, and the recipe for the famous 'Voroneț Blue' remains an unsolved secret to this day.

On the second day we explore Moldovița Monastery, erected by Petru Rareș in 1532 and painted in 1537 by master Toma, the same painter who worked at Humor Monastery. We then visit the Decorated Eggs Museum, with an impressive collection of folk art works, and embark on an unforgettable adventure with Mocănița Huțulca Moldovița, following by coach the railway route to Argel, where locals greet us with traditional preparations. Did you know that the narrow-gauge railway was built in 1888 by Louis Ortlieb, a sawmill owner from Munich, for transporting timber? The day continues with Sucevița Monastery, a foundation of the Movilă family from the 16th century, included in UNESCO World Heritage in 1993. On the northern wall of the church is the 'Ladder of Virtues', the only representation of this kind painted on the exterior of a church in the world. We end the day at Marginea, where we visit a black pottery workshop, an art with roots from around 1500, whose uniqueness consists in oxygen-free firing, which gives the clay its characteristic black colour.

On the third day, after breakfast, we visit the 'Ion Creangă' Memorial House and Museum in Humulești, the place that inspired the great Romanian storyteller's work. If you're passionate about spirituality and tradition, discover also all our tours dedicated to Romanian heritage.
