When to visit Malta: month-by-month guide | Luxuria Travel

Malta is a fascinating destination, where millennia of history intertwines with spectacular beaches and crystal-clear water. Choosing the right time to visit can transform a pleasant holiday into a memorable one. In this guide I present, month by month, what awaits you on the Maltese archipelago — from water temperatures and tourist crowds, to cultural events and exploration opportunities. Whether you dream of beach and swimming, or prefer to discover Malta's three UNESCO sites — the Megalithic Temples, Hypogeum Ħal Saflieni and the historic city of Valletta — you will find here all the information needed to plan the perfect getaway.

Spring in Malta: April–May, the ideal season for culture

Spring is one of the most pleasant periods to explore Malta, especially if you are interested in cultural heritage and architecture. Temperatures are mild, and tourist crowds still moderate. It is the perfect time to visit Valletta, with 320 monuments concentrated in just 55 hectares, or Mdina — the medieval city that receives 1.5 million visitors annually, despite having fewer than 300 permanent residents. In April and May, the water temperature is not yet ideal for prolonged swimming, but walks along the coast and boat trips to Comino are delightful. If you wish to combine cultural tourism with impressive landscapes, our 5-day city break in Malta offers exactly this balance.

Summer in Malta: June–August, beach season and crowds

Summer is peak season in Malta, and the water temperature reaches its maximum in August, reaching 26°C. According to specialist guides, the sea water in Malta is comfortable for swimming from June to November, so summer is perfect for the beach. However, July and August bring the highest air temperatures and the greatest tourist crowds. If you like vibrant atmosphere and crowds do not bother you, summer is the right time. Otherwise, June remains an excellent alternative: water already warm, fewer tourists and more accessible prices than in peak season. For those seeking other Mediterranean destinations, I recommend you also take a look at our tour on the Amalfi Coast.

Autumn in Malta: September–October, the optimal point

September is considered by many specialists the best month overall for Malta, alongside June: warm water, fewer tourists and bearable temperatures. The sea is still very pleasant for swimming, crowds decrease noticeably after the end of European school holidays, and prices become more friendly. October extends this favourable interval, although towards the end of the month water temperature begins to drop slightly. It is the ideal period to combine the beach with exploring the island of Comino — a tiny island of just 3 km² where vehicles are not permitted to preserve its tranquillity — and to discover the megalithic temples, which are older than Stonehenge and approximately 1,000 years older than the Egyptian Pyramids.

Winter in Malta: November–March, for cultural explorers

Winter in Malta is mild compared to the rest of Europe, but it is not beach season. Water temperature reaches its minimum in February, dropping to 14°C, which makes swimming less attractive for most visitors. However, if you are passionate about history, art and architecture, winter offers real advantages: very few tourists, reduced accommodation prices and the possibility of visiting museums and historic sites in complete tranquillity. Valletta, Mdina and the megalithic temples can be explored without the haste and crowds specific to the summer season. It is also the ideal time to plan your next holiday, consulting our departures calendar to choose the perfect date.
